Pelican Racing use Live Media GPS to broadcast progress at Cowes Week

live video streaming using a mobile phone

Press Release - Pelican Racing team uses Live Media GPS to broadcast Video and GPS location live from Cowes Week 2008

Pelican Racing is working with Inca X   to provide a live stream from their SB3 boat as they compete at Cowes Week from 2-9 August 2008.

The technology underpinning the Inca X solution enables a retail mobile phone (in this case a HTC Touch Diamond) to stream live footage to a website. Anyone interested in sailing can visit the website to see not only a video stream but also plot the position of the Pelican Racing SB3 directly to MS Virtual Earth. As this is a Beta test for the technology, the team have not had the luxury of preparing a marine version of this popular online map but, assuming a successful trial, is optimistic that the concept will be refined for future regattas.

Director of Pelican Consulting, and crew member, Ian Gilmour explains why they agreed to trial the technology for Inca X:

"I've known Phil Bishop at Inca X for a long time. In the history of high tech, only Q  comes more highly rated. Pelican mostly works in developing risk management technology for investment banks, but this retail application is too much fun to ignore. I just hope we do well, otherwise the world and his wife is going to know about it – and after Cork Week we do not need any more pressure!” (Read our Blog for more details )

Phil Bishop, CTO for Inca X explains a little more about the application itself and why he chose Cowes Week as the next step in publicising this technology to a wider public:

"Our Live Media GPS application allows anyone to broadcast their current activities directly from a mobile phone. The broadcasts are directly linked to Virtual Earth so that your precise location and movements can be mapped. You can share all this information with your chosen audience, be it public or private.

"Working with Pelican Consulting at Cowes Week is a fantastic opportunity for us to really put the software through its paces under what will undoubtedly be some challenging conditions. Live Media GPS has been designed to be straight forward to install and use and is fully supported by Inca X. We'd be interested to know what people think of it.”

Katie Ashworth, World Council Secretary of the Laser SB3 Class, is another interested party
in this technology demonstration : “A new technology which increases the participation of
the sailing public is something we will monitor with interest”

After Cowes Week 2008, the highlights of the racing will be edited and hosted on YouTube - subscribe for RSS on the Pelican Consulting website or the Pelican racing blog for details of the feed.
